Children left behind by parents suffering mental health problems, study shows
Mental health problems of children left behind by their parents are becoming a serious problem for China as a survey showed nearly half of the teenage boys have emotional issues.
The survey, based on over 300 left-behind children across China, was conducted between January and March by Zheng Yi, a pediatrician at Beijing Anding Hospital of Capital Medical University, and Gu Jin from The Peasants and Workers Democratic Party Central Medical Department.
It was released today at the 21st IFP (International Federation for Psychotherapy) World Congress of Psychotherapy in Shanghai.
The survey said conduct problems are very prevalent among these children, who are cared for by relatives, usually in rural areas, while their parents have gone off for jobs in the cities. It showed boys aged 12 to 16 have the most severe problems, including disobedience, hyperactivity and social shortcomings. About a third of them exhibit disobedient behavior.
For girls, problems come much younger. Girls aged 6 to 11 have the most complex problem profile, with a third reported to suffer from depression, the survey said.
None of the participants in the survey sought mental health consultations or services. Only two were taken to ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) clinics in children's hospitals, the report said.
