Children safe after truck hijacker shot

A MAN who stabbed a truck driver and drove off with two young children still in the vehicle was shot dead by police yesterday.

Police in east China’s Shandong Province said the man, surnamed Yan, 33, had been driving his BMW when he collided with another car and was then hit by a truck.

With his car out of action, he forcibly took another vehicle at the scene and drove off.

But not long after, he crashed into a van in Laixi City, the city’s deputy police chief Li Guibin said. He was on foot, Li said, when he spotting the truck at a service station.

Yan attacked the driver, 25-year-old Sun, stabbing him twice before driving off in the truck with Sun’s relatives, a 4-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl, still in their seats.

Police in Laixi received a report at 12:13am, Xinhua news agency reported, and immediately launched an intensive manhunt.

They were soon on Yan’s trail and he was forced to bring the truck to a halt near Zhangling Village around 5am.

Li said the children were in the passenger seat beside Yan. He offered to take their place as a hostage but negotiations had no effect and when it looked as if Yan was about to stab the girl, police opened fire.

The children were unharmed. Sun is recovering in hospital after emergency treatment for his injuries.
