Children trapped by blaze

MORE than 90 children were taken to hospital yesterday after fire trapped them in a building in Ningde, a city in southeast China’s Fujian Province yesterday.

The fire broke out around 11:30am in the Juchi Plaza in the city’s Jiaocheng District.

Local residents joined firefighters in rescuing the children, many of whom had to jump or were thrown from their second-floor kindergarten.

A video online showed residents also helped children down ladders and put them in vehicles to rush them to hospital. A total of 104 people, 92 children and 12 adults, were taken to hospital for observation or treatment for injuries sustained in the rescue effort.

The blaze was put out at 1:30pm. It is believed to have started in a flower shop on the ground floor but what caused it is still under investigation.
