Children’s book sales increase this year
The children’s book market in China increased 5.5 percent from January to September this year compared to the same period of last year, despite a slowdown in the overall book market.
The data were revealed by OpenBook, a Chinese publishing industry information and consulting company, at the first China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair, which opened yesterday.
Jiang Yanping, vice general manager of OpenBook, said the children’s book sector accounted for about 16 percent of the book market last year.
Total sales of children’s books reached around 7.3 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion).
Children’s literature books were the top sellers in the category followed by comics and cartoons and brain game books, Jiang said.
The share of foreign children’s books like the Harry Potter series slumped as young readers showed more interest in creations by Chinese writers.
Jiang said books written by foreign writers garnered 15.5 percent of total book sales from January to September this year. The United States was the top source of foreign books, followed by the United Kingdom and South Korea.
However, Li Dan, the director of external business cooperation at online bookstore Dangdang.com, told Shanghai Daily the company’s top 10 bestselling children’s books were written by overseas authors.
