Child's heart-op agony
THE mother of a seven-year old boy in Jiangsu Province was forced to have her son's chest opened to prove a medical blunder six years ago that could kill her son at any time.
The mother, surnamed Chen, said Changzhou No. 1 Hospital put a device, called an occluder, in her son's heart when he was 17 months old to seal a hole but put it in the wrong place, the Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.
Doctors told her the operation was successful but a health examination before the boy was about to go to school showed the hole still there.
Doctors at the Changzhou hospital denied making mistakes despite Chen showing them a report issued by doctors at the Shanghai Children's Medical Center.
Doctors at a Beijing heart hospital opened the boy's chest last April and sealed the hole properly but couldn't remove the misplaced device.
Li Fen, an expert in children's heart diseases at the Shanghai Children's Medical Center, said the occluder could cause an embolism at any time.
Chen is suing the hospital.
The hospital refused to comment on the case.
