China Coal senior official imprisoned for taking bribes

A senior executive of a large State-owned coal producer has been sentenced to eight years in prison for taking 2.84 million yuan (US$450,400) in bribes between 2007 and 2009.

Zhang Baoshan, former vice chairman of China Coal Energy Co, received a golf club membership card worth 680,000 yuan plus 400,000 yuan in cash from a Shanxi energy company. He also asked a Guangzhou company to sell him a villa, nearly 200 million yuan less than the market price, Beijing No. 2 Intermediate Court said.

Zhang was detained for investigation in 2009 soon after he returned from Macao where he was seen gambling in a casino VIP room, the Beijing Morning Post reported today.

The 59-year-old convict received a lenient sentence because he returned all of his illegal incomes and assets, the court said.

China Coal is the country's second largest coal producer by output.
