China Customs prepares charges against Lai Changxing
CHINA'S most notorious smuggling kingpin Lai Changxing is been investigated by the National Administration of Customs for his illegal activities, said Lu Peijun, deputy director of the administration, today.
The case will be handed over to the judicial department after the probe is completed, Lu said at a press conference in Beijing.
The case showed China's resolve to crack down on smuggling and official corruption, Lu said.
Lai was repatriated to China on July 23 by Canada where he stayed for 12 years and tried unsuccessfully to get an asylum.
Lai is the chief suspect in a multi-billion-dollar smuggling operation that took place between 1996 and 1999 in the port city of Xiamen in southeastern Fujian Province.
Lai and his accomplices smuggled into China foreign cars, oil and cigarettes worth billions of US dollars, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
