China Mobile boss faces probe

A general manager of the Sichuan branch of China Mobile is under investigation for economic disciplinary violations.

Li Hua, who has held the job for over 10 years, was brought for police questioning last Friday over money issues, Beijing- based news Website Caijing.com reported today. No further detail was available about the case.

The report said Li Hua was implicated by the case of Li Xiangdong, an official in charge of China Mobile Sichuan's musical ringtone services, who was caught this March when fleeing abroad with a large sum of money.

China Mobile refused to say whether the two cases were related. Li Hua told reporters earlier that Li Xiangdong's offences were his own fault.

The national audit office checked Li Xiangdong's assets and found wrongdoings before he run away with hundreds of millions of the company's money, the report said.

Fifty-one-year-old Li Hua promoted Li Xiangdong, 45, to his former post. He was the board president, general manager, and Party boss of China Mobile's Sichuan branch.

The report quoted an unnamed insider saying that whistle-blowing letters about Li Hua's offences have often been filed inside the company and nobody was surprised by the investigation.
