China 'Office' planned

A CHINESE version of the British hit comedy "The Office" is on its way, said its producer on his blog.

Ricky Gervais, the 49-year-old British comedian and the TV series' producer wrote last week that he and his staff were about to start work on developing a Chinese "The Office," which was about daily life in a paper company.

The original sitcom was set in the British city Slough, with Gervais playing David Brent, a regional manager described by his staff as "boss from hell" and a self-claimed philosopher, musician and politics fan.

The show started as a 14-episode BBC TV series in 2001 and grew into a huge global success, remade into foreign versions in the United States, France, Germany, Chile, Canada and Israel.

Gervais' David Brent has been remade as Michael Scott in the US version and Gilles Triquet in French. Who will play the boss in China is not known yet.

"The Office" ran for two series in Britain, ending in December 2003 with two Christmas specials.

Its American version, starring Steve Carrell, is in its seventh season.
