China Red Cross denies misuse of fund for war victims
THE Red Cross Society of China rejected accusations that it misused a trust fund created for World War II victims in China, claiming that its account books are audited every year.
The charity said that as a third party entrusted to manage the 500-million-yen fund set up by Kajima Corp, a Japanese contractor, to compensate Chinese inmates held in a labor camp during the late 1930s and early 1940s, it has no right to decide its use, the China National Radio reported today.
It is only responsible for executing plans made by the fund's management committee and distributing the money to the victims, the report said.
The Red Cross Society admitted there was some leftover in the account as it managed to locate only 520 of the 986 victims who were forced to work as slaves in the Hanaoka Coal Mines in Japan's Akita Prefecture, but it refused to publish how the leftover was used, saying it was not authorized to do that.
