China Red Cross refutes allegations of buying luxury cars

The Red Cross Society of China said it strictly followed government rules when assigning cars for its senior officials, denying online rumors that each official had access to two luxury cars.

A whistleblower claimed on the Internet that several luxury cars were parked in the Red Cross office in Beijing. Each official above bureau-level was assigned two cars to avoid the capital's odd-even traffic restrictions, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

To ease traffic congestion, Beijing limits the number of vehicles on the road by letting those with car plates ending with odd numbers to travel on odd dates and those ending with even numbers to travel on even dates.

The Red Cross assigned cars to its senior officials according to the regulations set by the Government Offices Administration of the State Council. It allocated 411,600 yuan (US$63,970) for car use in this year's budget, Ding Shuo, head of the policy and regulation division of the charitable organization, told the newspaper.
