China Southern's first A380 fails to take off en route to Shanghai

CHINA'S first Airbus 380 superjumbo belonging to China Southern Airlines suffered mechanical breakdown this morning before takeoff from Beijing to Shanghai.

The Guangzhou-based airline dispatched an Airbus 330 plane to take the more than 400 passengers on the flight that was scheduled to take off at 10am and arrived in the Pudong International Airport at 12:15pm.

A mechanical malfunction was detected on the A380 and the airline has to transport some equipment from abroad to fix it, the China Southern announced on its official microblog at Sina.com shortly after the malfunction and apologized to passengers.

The airline declined to specify which part of the plane malfunctioned but said the problem could be repaired soon to resume the operation of the A380.

The airline promised to compensate 400 yuan (US$62.8) to each passenger on the flight, because many passengers bought the ticket especially to experience the country's first A380, a passenger onboard surnamed Yang said over his Sina microblog account (@yangYOUNG洋). Shanghai Daily has confirmed the incident with him over the phone.

The A330 took off around 11:30am, being delayed for more than an hour, according to Yang.

"Many passengers asked the shuttle bus to stop to when passed by the A380 on the apron to at least take some pictures with the superjumbo…we all feel pity that failed to aboard," Yang said.

The A380 began flying the Beijing-Shanghai route from Thursday. The airline will deploy the plane on the Beijing-Guangzhou route and began international routes from the end of the year according to the airline's previous plan.

The Southern airline bought a total of five A380s from the European aircraft maker Airbus. The second A380 will be delivered by the end of the year.
