China, allies team up to battle 'terrorists' in drill

THE anti-terror exercises of "Peace Mission 2010" staged by Shanghai Cooperation Organization countries rumbled with live-ammunition maneuvers in Kazakhstan yesterday.

With three red flares streaking the sky to signal the maneuvers' start, 5,000 troops from five of the six member states -- China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan -- swiftly moved out to besiege and attack the "assumed terrorist groups" that attempted to seize "residential areas."

Tanks from Kazakhstan's army moved into positions to flank some 1,500 members from "the assumed terrorist groups" equipped with light arms, mortars and anti-aircraft missiles.

Then joint forces moved in, with the support of more than 100 cannons, mortars and rocket launchers pounding a hail of shells on the positions of the "assumed enemy."

Two H-6H bombers from China, escorted by two J-10 jet fighters, swooped down and poured bombs on the targets as part of the joint forces' air support.

This is the first time that combat aircraft of China's air forces maneuvered a long-distance raid in an international military drill.

One Mi-26, the world's largest helicopter in load capacity, joined the operation, airdropping 96 special force combatants to attack the "terrorists."

Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie, Kazakhstan's Defense Minister Adilbek Dzhaksybekov, Russian Defense Mininster Anatoly Serdyukov, Kyrgyzstan's Defense Minister Abibilla Kudaiberdiev, and Tajikistan's Defense Minister Sherali Khayrulloyev witnessed the opening of the maneuvers.

The exercise lasted into the night, when the "terrorists" attempted to flee to the border areas after suffering a heavy blow. The joint command mobilized the reserve troops and locked the "illegal armed groups" within their "base."

At 8pm sharp, the joint command launched a night-time operation to clear the "terrorists" with support of artillery and eight armed helicopters from Kazakhstan, Russia and China, and successfully ended the operation half an hour later.

This is the first time that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization countries integrated a night-time maneuvering program into their joint military exercises.

The 15-day "Peace Mission 2010" concluded yesterday.
