China announces geographic coordinates for Diaoyu islets
THE State Oceanic Administration yesterday released a string of geographic coordinates of the Diaoyu Islands in a new move to affirm sovereignty over the islets.
The announcement detailed the exact longitude and latitude of the islands and included location maps, three-dimension effect graphs and sketch maps.
The administration said on its website that the move was designed to help the public better understand the Diaoyu Islands issue.
The fresh statement came after the Chinese government announced on Monday the base points and baselines of the territorial waters of the islands, as well as the names and coordinates of 17 base points.
In statements released earlier this week, the administration said a country has the same sovereignty over its territorial sea as it does over territorial land, and such sovereignty extends to the seabed and subsoil as well as the air space above it.
China sent six surveillance ships to waters near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea on Friday. China was responding to Japan's decision on Tuesday to buy the islands from a private Japanese owner despite Chinese warnings against doing so.
In Japan, candidates vying to lead the top opposition party called yesterday for a tough stand against China in the dispute.
