China art auctions top world in transaction value

THE total value of artworks auctioned in China was the largest in the world in recent years, followed by Britain and the United States, a Shanghai organizer of the World Chinese Collectors Convention said today.

Works of mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau artists were sold for 97.5 billion yuan last year, far outnumbering that of other countries, said Zhu Junbo, deputy director of the organizing committee of the convention to be held in Taipei next Monday to Wednesday.

Six Chinese artists are among the world's 10 top-selling artists based on the value of their works, including Qi Baishi and Zhang Daqian. Qi Baishi occupies the top spot on the list, according to French art market analyst Artprice.

"Time has changed when the names of European artists like Van Gogh and Monet were treated the most valuable artists in the world's art market," Zhu said.

To enhance exchanges among Chinese collectors, Shanghai and Taipei jointly organized the World Chinese Collectors Convention with about 600 participants.

More than 200 collectors from the mainland, 200 from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau and about 100 from the United States will attend the convention that includes exhibitions and forums.
