China builds major stem cell research center
CHINA is aiming at becoming a world leader in cutting edge stem cell technology with the construction of Asia's largest stem cell base beginning yesterday in Taizhou City, Jiangsu Province.
The base is expected to contribute to breakthroughs in the study and application of stem cell technology to prolong life and cure disease.
Stem cells can renew themselves and scientists use them to fight diseases and heal injury.
The 20,000-square-meter base in Taizhou will have a stem cell bank and three centers carrying out applications, tests and clinical research, today's Hong Kong-based Ta Kung Pao reported.
China's Health Minister, Chen Zhu, in his letter of congratulation on the launch of the new base, said stem cell technology is one of the biotechnology sectors with the largest potential for development in China.
He said the technology is essential and practical in helping improve people's health and life.
