China calls for early restart of six-party talks

CHINESE Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said today China expects an early restart of the six-party talks.

But how and when it can be resumed demands further exchange of views, he said.

Yang made the remarks at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.

The process of six-party talks had been suspended for over two years, during which the security situation in northeast Asia saw complicated changes, he said.

He called on relevant parties to seize opportunities to resume the talks as soon as possible and to find solutions via dialogue and consultation.

China has been actively supporting bilateral contacts and dialogues among relevant parties, Yang said.

Mentioning the September 19 Joint Statement released in 2005, Yang said it had contributed to more exchanges of relevant parties and played an important role in maintaining regional stability.

Yang expressed the belief that as long as relevant parties maintain confidence and give full play to their wisdom, denuclearization in the Korean peninsula and long-term security in northeast Asia can be achieved finally.
