China consumes nearly half of world鈥檚 antibiotics, report says
China has become the world’s biggest consumer of antibiotics with annual use at 162,000 tons in 2013, or nearly half of the world’s total, according to a study on the overuses of such medicines in Chinese cities.
The report conducted by the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry under the Chinese Academy of Sciences said 48 percent of the antibiotics used in the country were for humans with the remainder for animals, People’s Daily reported today on its Website.
The study was published last month in Environmental Science & Technology, an American journal, and is one of the first comprehensive studies on China’s antibiotic problem.
The overuse of antibiotics can contribute to the proliferation of drug-resistant bacteria and make medications less effective.
China’s consumption is more than 150 times to that of the United Kingdom and tenfold compared to the United States, according to the study.
It has also caused environmental problems since most of the drugs entered waterways through human and animal excretion, Ying Guangguo, the lead researcher, told the newspaper.
Some 50,000 tons of antibiotics have been discharged into waterways and soils every year, mostly in densely populated eastern China, according to the report.
