China denies transgenic rice test on children

THE Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ministry of Health neither approved nor participated in a controversial study that used Chinese children as guinea pigs to test genetically modified rice, authorities said.

The center has launched a probe and found none of its subsidiaries authorized or took part in the study, which didn't get an approval from the ethics committee of the Health Ministry either, the Beijing News reported today.

Meng Shi'an, the Chinese collaborator and co-author of the study, which was carried out by Tufts University in Massachusetts, has been suspended from his job by the disease control center and was subject to further investigation for providing contradictory statements.

The center has contacted Guangwen Tang, the lead author and director of the Carotenoids and Health Laboratory at Tufts University, to provide a detailed explanation about their study.

A Greenpeace article earlier accused the study of feeding GM rice to Chinese children.
