China gives up bid for 2026 World Cup
THE head of the China Football Association has confirmed that China has given up its bid to host the 2026 World Cup after it missed the chance for the 2022 tournament due to CFA's corruption scandal and chaotic management.
China's bid will be delayed by at least four to eight years, said Mohammed Bin Hammam, president of Asian Football Confederation, yesterday in Zibo, Shandong Province, Chongqing Evening News reported today.
Wei Di, president of CFA, also confirmed that China had withdrawn from the bidding as four other Asian countries were competing to host the 2022 tournament, practically dashing China?ˉs hope to hold the event in 2026.
"We have to give up because Asia has given priority to supporting one of the four countries --South Korea, Japan, Qatar and Australia. to host the world,s biggest sporting event in 2022. Once it succeeded, it's impossible for another Asian country to hold the next one," said an official with CFA.
A series of match-fixing scandals have tarnished CFA's credibility, leading to management revamp and a nationwide crackdown. Because of this, China missed the deadline to bid for the 2022 event, the official said with regret.
Several high-profile football officials, referees, coaches and players have been under investigation in a widening crackdown on corruption.
