China issues yellow alert as smog arrives in north

CHINA’S weather observatory yesterday issued a yellow alert for smog in the north of the country that is expected to linger until this evening.

Beijing and its neighboring provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shanxi and Shandong, as well as northeast China will face moderate smog, with south Beijing, central Hebei, central Shanxi, north Henan and northwest Shandong set to see heavy smog, the National Meteorological Center said.

The pollution should start to disperse about noon in north China, but is forecast to stay longer in the northeast, it said.

China has a color-coded weather alert system, with red the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

People in the affected areas are advised to wear face masks if engaging in outdoor activities, while those with respiratory problems should stay at home.

The weather warning came after the environment ministry yesterday named the 10 cities that were worst affected by air pollution in November.

Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, had the dubious honor of topping the list of 74 cities monitored. It was joined, in no particular order, by Jinan in Shandong, Changchun in Jilin, Harbin in Heilongjiang, and six cities in Hebei — Xingtai, Baoding, Shijiazhuang, Langfang, Tangshan and Hengshui.

The ministry said 34 of the 36 cities in the northeastern provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang were severely polluted between November 1 and November 14, while 10 of the 13 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region saw heavy pollution in late November.

Luo Yi, director of the ministry’s environmental monitoring department, said air quality in the Pearl and Yangtze river delta areas improved in November.

The 10 cities with the best air quality in the month were all in southern China, namely Haikou, Xiamen, Zhoushan, Fuzhou, Guiyang, Huizhou, Lishui, Nanchang, Kunming and Shenzhen.
