China maintains alert as super typhoon Usagi nears

China's national observatory today maintained a warning for super typhoon Usagi, which was expected to hit coastal region of southern Guangdong Province on September 23.

The center of Usagi, one of the strongest typhoons to hit China's southeastern coast this year, was at 625 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's Cape Eluanbi early today, and would continue to strengthen and move northwestward at a speed of up to 20 km per hour, the National Meteorological Center forecast.

The center said Usagi would bring strong gales to sea waters of the Taiwan Strait and east of Taiwan today and tomorrow.

It also forecast that a cold front would sweep across most parts of China from September 21 to 25. Temperatures in Gansu Province as well as Xinjiang Uygur and Inner Mongolia autonomous regions were expected to fall tomorrow, with thermometers in some Xinjiang regions plunging by up to 12 degrees Celsius.
