China may ban baby bottle plastic

THE Chinese government might ban the use of organic compound Bisphenol A in plastic baby bottles, yesterday's Beijing News quoted a health official as saying.

Authorities have begun research on the dissolution volume of BPA in baby bottles to assess its impact on infants, said Li Ning, deputy director of the Nutrition and Food Safety Institute under the Chinese Center of Disease Control and Prevention Center.

Last month, the Ministry of Health issued a draft list of legal substances in food packages on its official website to solicit public opinions.

According to the draft, BPA was banned from use in vessels having direct contacts with baby food.

The Europe Union will ban the use of BPA in baby bottles from June 1.

The European Food Safety Authority found last September that BPA is safe up to a daily intake of 0.05 milligrams per kilogram of bodyweight, but it raised some questions with respect to the impact of the chemical on infants.
