China offers to aid Iran deal success

PRESIDENT Xi Jinping has told US President Barack Obama that China would work with the United States and other parties to ensure implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement, China’s Foreign Ministry said yesterday.

Last week’s deal, backed by the UN Security Council on Monday, lifts sanctions imposed by the US, the European Union and the United Nations in return for Iran’s agreement to long-term curbs on a nuclear program the West suspects is aimed at building a nuclear bomb.

The agreement sends a positive message to the world that the international community can resolve major disputes through negotiation, Xi said in a phone call with Obama.

China and the US worked closely together during the talks and this is good for their relationship, Xi added. “China and the United States have maintained close communication and coordination throughout the negotiation process, which is yet another sign showing the two countries’ commitment to building a new model of major country relations,” he said.

“China will continue to have constructive cooperation with all parties, including the United States, to ensure the implementation of the comprehensive agreement and the UN Security Council decision,” Xi said.

Obama said China had played a vital role during the Iran nuclear talks and expresses his gratitude for China’s contribution to the historic deal.

“The US hopes to continue coordination and cooperation with China and make joint efforts to ensure the implementation of the agreement,” Obama said, adding that the US-China cooperation on Iran’s nuclear issue shows that the two sides can address global challenges such as climate change, economic development and public health through mutual cooperation and joint efforts.

China and Iran have close diplomatic, economic, trade and energy ties, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had been active in pushing both Washington and Tehran to reach agreement.

Xi told Obama he was looking forward to his trip to the US in September when he hopes to further promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Obama said he and the American people are looking forward to the visit and to engaging in close consultations that will make sure it is fruitful.
