China plans to assemble emergency nuke team
CHINA plans to assemble a national nuclear emergency response team of around 320 members before the end of 2018, China Central Television reported yesterday.
Its job will be to monitor nuclear radiation, address emergency situations, and carry out cleanup operations.
The team will comprise six units — command, coordination and technical support; emergency rescue; engineering rescue; emergency monitoring and radiation protection; decontamination; and medical aid.
In addition to its domestic responsibilities, the team will be equipped to participate in international nuclear emergency rescue operations, said Wang Yiren of the China Atomic Energy Authority.
It was revealed in China’s first nuclear white paper, released in January, that China has already established 25 professional nuclear emergency rescue forces across the country.
Nuclear activities began in the mainland in 1955, and there are now 30 operational nuclear power-generating units in the country, and another 24 are being built, according to “China’s Nuclear Emergency Preparedness.”
“China has consistently given top priority to nuclear safety in its peaceful use of nuclear energy,” the white paper said.
