China removes tsunami warning after waves abate
CHINA'S marine environment forecaster has removed a tsunami warning after the huge waves churned by a massive earthquake off Japan this afternoon were reduced to less than 50 centimeters when reaching Taiwan.
An earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale jolted the east coast of Japan's main Honshu Island at 1:46 pm Beijing today, causing a tsunami alert in the Asian Pacific region, but the Chinese coast has been little affected so far.
China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center issued a tsunami warning after the quake, whose tremors were also felt in Beijing and its neighboring port city Tianjin.
But the center said the waves would not have a disastrous impact on China's coastal areas.
The waves reached the eastern coast of Taiwan at about 5:40 pm, abating to less than 50 cm in height, it said this evening.
The center said it decided to remove the tsunami warning considering the continuously abating height of waves before reaching the mainland coast, expected at tonight and the wee hours of tomorrow.
Liu Jie, research fellow with the China Earthquake Network Center, told Xinhua that the crustal movements of the earth were active recently but, judged from a longer span of time, they were in a normal condition.
Since the scientific documents of earthquakes were only dated back to 110 years ago, the data could not support scientists worldwide to reach a uniform understanding of the earthquake cycle, he said.
"Based on our research, the earth crust entered a comparatively active period after the earthquake off Indonesia in 2004," he said.
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit Yingjiang County in southwest China's Yunnan Province yesterday, killing 25 people.
Liu denied the direct connections between the two earthquakes.
"Japan lies on the Pacific Plate while Yunnan is on the Eurasian Plate," he said.
Japan's east coast has been hit by several other powerful earthquakes measuring magnitude-6 or above since Wednesday morning, according to the China Earthquake Network Center.
