China rushes to aid by air and sea
CHINA will provide about 1,000 tons of fresh water to the water-starved Maldives by air and sea, said China’s foreign ministry and defence ministry.
In response to the Maldivian government’s request, China has provided emergency aid in cash and drinking water, the foreign ministry said.
China has arranged deliveries of bottled water by two Chinese civil aircraft to main island Male. The first flight arrived on Saturday.
An ocean rescue vessel of the Chinese navy suspended an escort mission and headed for Male on Friday. With 960 tons fresh water and seawater desalinating facilities on board, the vessel is scheduled to arrive today, the defense ministry said.
And Chinese air force aircraft are on standby for any rescue mission. The Chinese side is applying for an air route with the relevant countries, the defense ministry added.
