China says renewed tension 鈥榬egrettable鈥

CHINESE Foreign Minister Wang Yi said yesterday that after two months of relative calm on the Korean Peninsula, the resurfacing of tensions was regrettable.
Wang, speaking to reporters at a joint briefing with his Mongolian counterpart, said that China has an open attitude on solutions to the North Korean nuclear issue, but that parties should be consultative.
He called on all parties concerned to abide by relevant UN resolutions on the Korean Peninsula issue.
“China has always been open-minded to new propositions to resolve the issue, however, the stipulations and spirit of UN Security Council resolutions should be a common principle for all parties to follow,” Wang said.
China has fully implemented relevant UN resolutions on the issue, he added, and opposed the nuclear and missile programs of North Korea.
Wang said China firmly opposes actions to raise the tension on the peninsula and has always been working to promote peace and dialogue in accordance with all previous UN resolutions.
“Propositions and measures that are against or not included in the resolutions lack international legal support and will jeopardize the execution of UN resolutions,” he said.
“The situation on the Korean Peninsula is highly sensitive, and we hope that relevant parties can avoid provocation and do more to ease tension,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said later yesterday.
In late November, North Korea tested its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile yet, putting the continental United States within range.
