China seeks to build peaceful cyber space

CHINA advocates the building of a peaceful, secure, open and cooperative cyber space, President Xi Jinping said yesterday.

Speaking at a China-US Internet forum at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, Xi said the Internet was playing an increasingly important role in the peace and development of individual countries and the world.

How to govern and make better use of cyber space had become a question that all countries should care about and study, Xi said.

China maintains that every country should institute its own Internet policy in line with its own national conditions, he said.

Both China and the United States are major countries in the Internet sphere, where they have important common interests and room for cooperation, he said, suggesting the two countries have constructive talks on cyber issues on the basis of mutual respect and trust.

In so doing, he added, the two sides can create a new bright spot in bilateral cooperation and enable cyber space to bring more benefits to the two nations and people across the world.

China’s top Internet regulator told the forum both countries must work together on cyber security issues.

“We are in the same boat,” said Lu Wei “The only choice we have is to cooperate. We have to trust each other. We have to solve our problems through development. We have to dissolve our differences through cooperation.”
