China sees fewer fire casualties in 2015

CHINA reported 1,742 deaths related to fires in 2015, a year-on-year decrease of 4 percent, according to statistics from the Ministry of Public Security.
Last year saw some 339,000 fires, which led to direct economic losses of 3.95 billion yuan (600 million U.S. dollars), down by 16 percent from the previous year, said Li Wei, deputy minister of the police.
A total of 1,112 people were injured in fires, a 26.5-percent decrease, he said.
The ministry attributed the declines to better fire safety checks, which covered more than 6.3 million units and saw the elimination of more than 6.45 million risks.
The ministry said there were now 185,000 full-time firefighters in China, who have also taken part in various emergency rescues. Chinese fire squads rescued a total of 165,000 people and saved and protected properties worth more than 65 billion yuan in 2015.
