China set to resume ties with Gambia

CHINA is to resume diplomatic relations with Gambia after Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his counterpart Neneh MacDouall-Gaye signed a joint communique in Beijing yesterday.

China suspended relations with Gambia in 1995, when the African nation chose to officially recognize Taiwan.

The two countries agreed to exchange ambassadors and provide assistance for the establishment of embassies and the performance of their respective duties on a reciprocal basis.

According to the communique, China supports Gambia in its efforts to safeguard national sovereignty and develop its economy. It says Gambia recognizes there is only one China and that the Chinese government is the sole legal government representing the whole of China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.

Gambia undertakes not to establish any official relations or engage in any official contact with Taiwan, it adds.

Wang called the resumption of diplomatic ties a “historic moment” for both nations.

“The Chinese people always hold friendly sentiments for the Gambian people,” he said.

Gambia is willing to be China’s good friend and partner on the basis of mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty, said Gaye.

She said Gambia highly appreciates China’s long-term assistance to and mutually beneficial cooperation with Africa.

Gambia is willing to strengthen cooperation with China in such areas as agriculture, processing and manufacturing, trade and investment, infrastructure construction, tourism and people-to-people exchanges, she said, adding that Gambia will actively take part in cooperation within the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

Meanwhile, Gambia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and Sinohydro, a state-owned Chinese company, said they were in talks over increasinh energy production in the West African nation.

“When we fully finalize the deal, the project will greatly enhance the country’s ability to produce electricity for Gambians,” said Momodou Njie, permanent secretary at the ministry.
