China sticks to climate change policies

CHINA will adhere to its objectives, policies, approaches and actions in addressing climate change, Xie Zhenhua, China’s special representative on climate change affairs, said in Marrakech yesterday.
China will stay unswervingly consistent with its strong commitment to combating climate change, Xie told an event on the sidelines of a United Nations conference.
Actions and implementation in line with the Paris Agreement require a global effort, and China is active in continuing cooperation with all parties involved, he said at the event on Nationally Determined Contribution implementation and experience sharing.
To fulfill its commitment to the agreement, China will cut its carbon emissions per unit of GDP by 60 to 65 percent by 2030 from the 2005 levels, and peak its carbon emissions by 2030; increase non-fossil fuel sources in primary energy consumption to about 20 percent, and increase the forest stock volume by 4.5 billion cubic meters.
China is the first developing country to set up a national carbon emissions trading (EST) market based on its seven pilots that are running now. And it is promoting cooperation with Japan and South Korea on EST for an all-win mechanism, Xie said, highlighting low-carbon development and cooperation among east Asian countries.
He also praised the cooperation mechanism among the three Asian countries in the fields of low-carbon and circular economy, promoting collaborative works on moving ahead on a practical level to facilitate an important regional carbon market.
