China to conduct survey on hepatitis B epidemic
HEALTH officials will conduct a nationwide survey on hepatitis B prevalence later this year to study the latest epidemic of one of the most common viral infections in China.
The number of HBV carriers on the Chinese mainland dropped from 9.6 percent in 1996 to 7.17 percent in 2006 thanks to the promotion of HBV vaccination. The number of hepatitis C virus carriers also dropped from 3.4 percent to 0.47 percent due to strict screening of blood donors, experts said.
Shanghai will host the International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease next Friday.
"China and other countries in the Asian Pacific Region have the highest incidence of hepatitis infections," said Dr Wen Yumei, who will chair the symposium.
"During the symposium, medical experts and health officials from China and abroad will discuss with representatives from the World Health Organization on strategies for hepatitis prevention and control, and will forecast related medical development in the next 20 years."
The Chinese government has heightened public awareness of viral hepatitis and listed it as the top three infectious diseases in the country along with AIDS and tuberculosis.
