China to crack down on group purchases involving Vietnamese brides

CHINA will crack down on group purchase activities involving Vietnamese brides, who have become popular among low-income Chinese young men for their reputation of being less materialistic and more obedient.

Both China and Vietnam ban marriage agencies from international matchmaking involving their citizens.

People aren’t products that can be traded, and such businesses may involve abduction of women and marriage fraud, said Chen Shiqu, director of the Ministry of Public Security's Child-Trafficking Strike Office.

Chen spoke following a series of activities surrounding the Singles Day, which was yesterday.

A group purchase website, 55tuan.com, launched a “lucky drawing” for single Chinese men if they find a Vietnamese bride. It promises a round-trip ticket refund for the lucky drawing winner if he succeeds in marrying a Vietnamese woman.

Chen did not say specifically whether action would be taken against the 55tuan.com promotion.

The campaign started last Wednesday and ends tomorrow. By 2:19pm today, 28,546 men had signed up for the travel promotion event.
