China to punish 54 responsible for Wenzhou train crash
A total of 54 people, held accountable for the fatal high-speed train crash in July, will be given disciplinary punishment, it was agreed at an executive meeting of the State Council, or China's Cabinet, today.
These people include Liu Zhijun, the country's former railway minister, and Zhang Shuguang, railway ministry's deputy chief engineer, who were both removed from office over an alleged "severe violation of discipline" earlier this year.
On July 23, a high-speed train rammed into a stalled train near the city of Wenzhou in the eastern province of Zhejiang, leaving 40 people dead.
According to a final investigation report, the train crash was caused by flaws in train operation control system and inadequate emergency response of railway authorities.
