China to suspend Vietnam exchanges
CHINA is to suspend some of its plans for bilateral exchanges with Vietnam in response to the deadly violence against Chinese nationals in the country, the foreign ministry said yesterday.
Spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks while commenting on the possible repercussions of incidents in Vietnam that left two Chinese nationals dead and more than 100 others injured.
He said China had also lifted the level of security warnings for Chinese tourists in Vietnam, warning its citizens not to travel to the country. “The severe violence targeting foreign companies in Vietnam since May 13 has caused casualties and property losses for Chinese nationals. This sabotaged the atmosphere and conditions for bilateral communication and cooperation,” Hong said.
China will also consider taking further measures depending on how the situation develops, he added.
Meanwhile, more than 3,000 nationals have been evacuated following the attacks on Chinese workers and Chinese-owned businesses and swift action against the perpetrators has been demanded.
China’s Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng on Saturday urged Vietnamese authorities to “bring the relevant issues under control” and create a favorable environment for trade and investment.
