China urges US to take action to mend fences

CHINA yesterday urged the United States to take concrete actions to bring the frayed bilateral relationship back on track as two US diplomats ended a fence-mending mission to Beijing.

"The top priority for the US side is to take China's stance seriously, honor China's core interests and major concerns, show sincerity and take concrete actions to push China-US relations back toward sound and stable development," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a news briefing.

Qin's comments came at the end of a visit by US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and Senior White House Asia adviser Jeffrey Bader, who flew to Japan yesterday.

The pair's visit was the latest sign of US efforts to ease tensions after the US$6.4 billion arms sale plan to Taiwan and US President Barack Obama's meeting with the Dalai Lama.

Despite much media attention, both governments kept the diplomats' visit low-profile, with neither side informing the media of any meeting schedules in advance.

Steinberg and Bader made no public appearances and gave no press briefings during their three-day stay in Beijing.
