China urges efforts to guard against firework disasters

CHINA'S State Council Work Safety Committee today urged all local governments and departments to ensure production safety and guard against serious accidents especially those caused by fireworks.
The circular was made after an explosion caused by fireworks killed 20 and injured 49 in Shiqiaotou Village, Junbu Township of Puning City in Guangdong Province on Friday.
Local governments and relevant departments should step up efforts to monitor fireworks safety, according to the circular.
All work safety departments across China should overhaul fireworks producers, wholesalers and retailers. No sales should be made to units or individuals who did not have any permits to set off large-scale or powerful fireworks.
Stockpiles of fireworks should be limited in retailing sites and no fireworks lighting should be allowed near retailing sites, according to the circular.
Fireworks should be properly reclaimed after the festival, according to the circular.
The Lantern Festival, which falls Friday this year, is traditionally the end of the Chinese Spring Festival.
The Lantern Festival is the 15th day of the first month on the Chinese lunar calendar with activities like solving word puzzles pasted on lanterns, eating yuanxiao (glutinous rice dumpling) and setting off fireworks.
Last year, a fireworks-caused blaze engulfed the China Central Television (CCTV) complex on the Lantern Festival. The fire involved a 30-story building that houses a nearly-completed luxury Mandarin Oriental Hotel, part of the new headquarters of the state television network, in the Chaoyang District in northeastern Beijing.
