China urges no escalation of tensions
CHINA hopes the UN Security Council resolution on North Korea can be “fully and seriously” implemented, urging parties concerned not to intensify tensions in the Korean Peninsula.
Foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told at a daily news briefing yesterday that new sanctions were not an end in themselves, and only dialogue and negotiation could solve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
Hong said sanctions should avoid impacting the lives of North Korea’s general population and its humanitarian needs as much as possible.
He said it was clear they were aimed at preventing North Korea from developing its nuclear and missile programs, promoting the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and upholding the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.
He said the resolution reiterated that the nuclear issue should be solved through dialogue and negotiation by relevant parities and supported the resumption of the six-party talks.
As chair of the six-party talks, China maintains an objective and fair attitude in approaching how to resume the talks, he said.
China had proposed parallel tracks, which involve denuclearization of the peninsula and replacement of the Korean armistice with a peace agreement.
It is willing to discuss the routes and steps of this approach with relevant parties, Hong said.
The situation on the peninsula is complex and sensitive, Hong said, urging parties concerned not to intensify tensions.
Hong reiterated that China opposed the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, an advanced US missile defense system, in the Korean Peninsula, calling for prudent actions by certain countries.
“All parties have a responsibility to maintain peace and stability on the peninsula,” Hong said.
