China welcomes Canadian decision

CHINA yesterday welcomed the Canadian Federal Court's decision to uphold the deportation of Lai Changxing.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said on the ministry's website that Lai was the prime suspect in a smuggling case in the city of Xiamen, Fujian Province, and had been sought by law enforcement for several years.

"The Chinese government's position is very clear that Lai should be deported to China and put on trial," Ma said.

Lai arrived in Canada in 1999 on a tourist visa. Since then, he has fought his deportation in one of the country's longest extradition cases.

Police statistics in 2010 showed that there were nearly 600 Chinese suspects at large overseas wanted for economic crimes, mostly corruption.

Despite the assistance of bilateral judicial cooperation and Interpol, only a fraction of Chinese fugitives have been repatriated, a fact which had "encouraged" corrupt officials to flee overseas to escape punishments.

China has made repatriation of corrupt officials a priority in its international judicial cooperation plan.
