China won't classify online games: Ministry
CHINA will not classify computer games in a new regulation it is drafting on the online gaming industry, according to Zhang Xinjian, an official with China's Cultural Ministry.
The regulation is expected to be ready by June, he told today's Beijing News.
Zhang, a delegate to the annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in Beijing, was responding to a proposal about online games and Net cafes put forward by delegate Yan Qi, president of Taoranju Food Group, which had sparked heated debate, the newspaper said.
Yan proposed the country should shut all existing Internet cafes and replace them with government-backed bars to improve supervision of pornography and prevent online addiction.
Zhang said the government would recommend healthy computer games rather than classify them, which he said was impractical. And an industry standard on Internet game development may help solve the problem, he added.
