China's 1st aircraft carrier may be named after Liaoning Province
CHINA'S first aircraft carrier may be named after Liaoning, the name of the Chinese province where it was refitted.
Li Jie, a researcher of the China Navy Military Academy told the Southern Metropolis Daily, suggested the aircraft carrier's possible new name.
The carrier, which was refitted from the Ukrainian vessel Varyag, is expected to be commissioned by the end of the year as all the necessary facilities have been installed and the carrier has passed all its 10 sea trials since last August, Li has said.
Previously, some observers speculated that the aircraft carrier might be named after Mao Zedong, founder of the New China, or after the capital Beijing, but Li said that was unlikely.
It was also widely suggested that the carrier might be named after Shi Lang, a Qing Dynasty (1636-1912) admiral who led a fleet to Taiwan Island in 1681.
Aircraft carriers and cruisers are usually given Chinese provincial-level names, while destroyers and frigates must be named after large or medium-sized cities, while smaller vessels can be named after mountains or famous people, according to a Chinese Navy rule.
The name will be officially announced on the first day of its commissioning, the navy authority has said.
Meanwhile, the nation's first carrier left port on August 10 last year for its first sea trial and has since then regularly been tested in both the Yellow and Bohai seas.
Though the carrier will be equipped with a defense system able to launch attacks on missiles, aircraft and approaching vessels, the country's defense ministry says it will mainly be used for training and experiments.
