China's Backbone award offered with a price

ORGANIZERS of a national award called "China's Backbone" admitted charging each successful candidate 9,800 yuan (US$1,516) as service fee but denied the money was used to buy the honor.

Chinese Economic Journal Assocation, one of the organizers, said the money was collected to cover meal and hotel costs during the award ceremony as well as the production cost of a souvenir book, the Beijing News reported today.

The claim came in response to speculation that Ni Ping, a popular CCTV hostess, paid money to buy a so-called "China's Backbone" award after a netizen Liu Xianming posted a payment document online.

Liu said he received an invitation in May to attend the first "China Backbone" award ceremony, which was to honor a dozen Chinese individuals and companies for their outstanding contribution to the nation.

The invitation letter noted that winners would have their stories compiled into a book and it provided a bank account for fee payment.

Liu said he soon received a phone call from the organizers, saying he was shortlisted and asking him to pay the fee.
