China's Cup crackdown on drunk driving
CHINESE police will launch a nationwide crackdown on drunk driving on July 10, the Ministry of Public Security said today.
Driving under the influence of alcohol was on the rise since the 2010 FIFA World Cup began, the ministry said on its Website. Many drivers were also caught driving when they were tired after watching late matches at pubs and bars.
The ministry suggested football fans should watch games at home to be safe.
But the ministry's early warning sparked doubts over the effectiveness of the campaign. One commentator said the police wouldn't catch anyone drinking for the World Cup because there were no matches scheduled on July 10.
Police have detained 38,000 drunk drivers in 313,000 cases since last August. Over 280,000 driving licenses were suspended.
