China’s ‘grave concern’ at Japan’s Diaoyu remarks

China has expressed “grave concern” over Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga’s remarks on the Diaoyu Islands yesterday, stressing that China will not tolerate actions that violate its territorial sovereignty.

Foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a regular press briefing that China is firm in its resolution and determination on safeguarding sovereignty over the islands in the East China Sea.

Suga had said that Japan has the option of stationing civil servants on the uninhabited islands. Stationing public servants on the islands was a campaign promise made by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s hawkish ruling party, which is also pushing to give Japan’s military a more assertive role in international peacekeeping and to step up its territorial defenses.

Hong warned that such a move would not be tolerated. If the Japanese side was deliberately provocative, it must bear the consequences, he said.

Hong urged the Japanese side to face up to history and reality, take concrete actions to correct its error and stop all provocative actions that undermine China’s sovereignty so as to eliminate obstacles for improving bilateral relations.

A seven-ship fleet from the China Coast Guard patrolled the territorial waters around the Diaoyu Islands yesterday morning, the State Oceanic Administration said. It was the 59th Diaoyu Islands patrol by Chinese law-enforcement vessels since September 2012.

Hong said that Chinese official vessels patrolling the waters was normal official activity.

Chinese law-enforcement vessels have conducted regular patrols around the Diaoyu Islands since September 2012, when Japan announced a plan to “purchase” some of the islands.

While safeguarding its sovereignty over the islands, China still seeks a peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and consultation, Hong added.
