China's own Maglev ready to be tested

CHINA will have its own home-developed mid-and-low speed Maglev trains by April.

The home-made Maglev train, developed by Beijing Enterprises Holdings Maglev Technology Development Co, will go into production if it passes a 100,000-kilometer trial, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

The two-locomotive train will have a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

The mid-and-low speed maglev train will be able to climb more easily and will produce less noise than subway trains, the report said.

"The electromagnetic radiation inside the train will be no more than that of a television," Liu Zhiming, president of the company told the news agency.

In 2003, Shanghai started the Maglev line that links Pudong International Airport to the Longyang Road Station on Metro Line 2 with an investment of 8.9 billion yuan (US$1.3 billion).

The line runs for 30 kilometers and the Maglev can travel at 430 kilometers per hour, reaching Pudong airport in eight minutes.
