China's population to hit 1.5 billion by 2033

CHINA'S population is expected to peak at 1.5 billion by 2033, said the country's deputy family planning director.

This is based on an annual increase of 7 million over next decade, said Zhao Baige at a seminar on population and development in Yinchuan City, capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

The country will have its biggest labor pool - 1 billion people - by 2016 and see its elderly population peak by 2040, when there will be 400 million people aged over 60.

Meanwhile, the country still has levels of illiteracy much higher than the figure of 2 percent or less found in most developed countries.

The average amount of time most citizens spend in education is no more than nine years, Baige said.

He told the seminar that 4 to 6 percent of babies born each year - between 800,000 to 1 million children - were born with defects.

Delegates also heard that the male-female birth ratio reached 119.45 to 100 last year, a time which also saw an increase in China's aging population, especially in rural areas where many young people have left for urban areas.

People aged over 60 currently account for 12.5 percent of China's population. By 2020, this will be 17.1 percent.

The mobile population has reached 200 million in recent years, and some 300 million people will move to towns and cities in the next 20 years.

Their demands for rights and services shall be further guaranteed, said Zhao.

It is predicted that due to rapid urbanization and economic growth Shanghai and Beijing will each have populations exceeding 50 million by 2050 - more than double the current level.

China's urbanization rate - the percentage of people in urban centers - will hit 70 percent in 2050, compared with 46.6 percent in 2009.

China is the world's most populous country, with around 1.32 billion people as estimated in 2007.
