China's supercomputer Tianhe-1 intact but shut down after blasts
The office building of Chinese supercomputer Tianhe-1, one of the world's fastest supercomputers, suffered damage. Sources at Tianhe-1 told Xinhua the computer is not damaged, but they have shut down some of its operations as a precaution.
Tianhe-1 provides data services to more than 300 organizations across China, including several universities and banks.
China’s supercomputer Tianhe-1 was shut down following the massive blasts in a nearby warehouse in north China's port city of Tianjin, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The blast shattered windows and shook down part ceilings of the National Supercomputer Center in Tianjin, just several kilometers from the explosion site. But its Tianhe-1 wasn’t affected.
Liu Guangming, the center’s director, said they have shut down Tianhe-1 for the sake of safety and it would be restarted under the government’s ordor, Xinhua reported.
Unveiled in October 2009, Tianhe-1 was China’s first supercomputer. It had been ranked as the world's fastest supercomputer from November 2010 to June 2011.
