Chinese, US join to bust porn chain
CHINESE and US police have jointly busted the world's biggest Chinese-language pornographic website in their first cooperation to fight online smut.
With over 10 million users in China, the United States and other countries, a chain of membership-based, Chinese-language pornographic websites under the Sunshine Entertainment Alliance have been shut down, China's Ministry of Public Security said yesterday.
Wang Yong, the websites' primary operator, was arrested in the United States on June 23 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In a simultaneous raid, Chinese police detained more than 10 people suspected of maintaining the websites in China, the ministry said.
Wang, a native of Fujian Province in China's southeast, built a pornographic website in the United States in 2002. Wang eventually controlled 48 porn sites, making his the world's largest chain of such sites as well as the chain serving the most Chinese-speaking users.
In China, 18 of Wang's websites offered child pornography, stimulating some criminals to commit more crimes, including rape, according to the ministry.
Besides spreading obscene information, the sites were overrun with sexual predators and prostitutes. Many sex criminals exchanged their methods of operation and lewd pictures on the sites.
Chinese police kept a close eye on Wang's website chain, which has over 10 million subscribers, for a long time, arresting nearly 1,000 web page developers and operators. But since the founder and the servers of the sites were based in the United States, they could not completely destroy the alliance.
To fight child pornography, the Ministry of Public Security and the FBI decided to join forces to investigate the case in April 2010.
The ministry issued an international arrest warrant for Wang, who was seized by US police in June while another 10 suspects in charge of money laundering and website maintenance in China have been caught by Chinese police.
According to China's criminal law, individuals convicted of producing, copying, publishing, selling or distributing pornography face 10 years to life in prison.
