Chinese Vice Premier oversees mine rescue

CHINA'S Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang is supervising the search and rescue operations at the flooded coal mine in Shanxi Province. He arrived at the site early yesterday.

Zhang visited the rescue team and encouraged them to spare no effort to save the 153 workers trapped in the coal mine. He stressed the importance of implementing key instructions from President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.

Zhang says the top priority is to drain the flood water while ensuring ventilation in the mine shaft. This is expected to increase the odds of survival for the trapped workers. An expert team has been set up to make plans for the rescue and prevent secondary disasters.

He ordered the establishment of rescue headquarters and set up teams in charge of personnel search, medical treatment, communication and disaster relief.

The coal mine in north China is state-owned. zhang says managers of other mines should learn from the accident and tighten safety measures to prevent similar disasters.
